This is an easy-to-build dust separator with a baffle based on J. Phil Thien’s well-known “cyclone” design. It works because the incoming air is forced around the outside wall, where the heavier dust and chips fall through a slot in the baffle, into the large trash can below.

The popular Phil Thien baffle that you can add to a traditional dust collector works almost identical to a separator lid with about a 92% separation efficiency by weight. This means it also simply passes the filter ruining airborne dust right through.

I built this based on info from J. Phil Thien’s website. In his gallery are pics and hints on the design. I say this because he gives you just enough info to help you build it without step by step plans.

A Thien separator, sometimes called a Thien baffle, is a device to direct an airsteam with dust in it to allow the dust to fall out of the airstream. It can be used between the DC blower and the tools that generate the chips and dust, just like the Dust Deputy, or it can be placed after the blower inside a DC.

Phil Thien made a DIY dust separator design. A lot of guys have put this together, and it gets great reviews. I was able to make a similar separator using only scrap plywood, some dirt cheap PVC and elbows, and a $2 bucket.
